During his address at the Parliament of the United Kingdom marking the 31st anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Denis Becirovic declared that preserving the truth about the genocide safeguards the moral foundations of Europe.
He expressed gratitude to the UK Government, Parliament, and citizens for continuously commemorating the UK’s National Srebrenica Memorial Day and supporting the UN Resolution declaring July 11 the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide. Paying tribute to figures like Lord Paddy Ashdown and Dr Waqar Azmi, he also honored the Mothers of Srebrenica for their immense courage and pursuit of justice.
The Chairman warned of current political dangers, emphasizing the need to recognize and stop malign Russian influence in the Western Balkans and its support for separatists in the Republika Srpska entity. He cautioned against policies of genocide denial and the glorification of war criminals.
To counter these threats, Becirovic advocated for accelerated NATO accession, calling membership the only credible security guarantee and a key geopolitical investment in collective Euro-Atlantic security. A stable, democratic, and multiethnic Bosnia and Herzegovina in NATO, he noted, prevents future atrocities and ensures lasting peace.
